There's probably no more personal or intimate way of cruising our many waters than by kayak or canoe.
Yes, it takes a little effort on your part to propel yourself but the rewards are brilliant. With so many waterway options, from the open sea to placid lakes, broad estuaries and meandering rivers there’s no end to the experiences you can have on your own or with friends and family. Going offshore you can get up close to dolphins, or venture closer to shore to explore and take in the beauty of the many tiny inlets and coves. Inland and upstream you can discover the unspoiled bushland – where you might also find an interpretive walk along Aboriginal hunting tracks and camp sites. It’s easy to hire equipment or book a guided kayaking or canoe tour with a professional operator. Beginners to advanced enthusiasts are welcome. For something different book an Oyster Tour or Guided Twilight Paddle. Gliding across Durras Lake at sunset is an exquisite experience. Being one of the purest estuaries in the country its’ glassy water reflects the light so clearly that you feel as though you’re paddling across the sky itself. Or try the Clyde River north of Nelligen where you’ll discover parts of the waterway you can only get to by canoe or kayak. The Moruya River into Deua National Park presents another unique option. Maybe an early morning paddle on a coastal lake or at the mouth of one of our rivers is more your thing. You are almost guaranteed to encounter wildlife and marine life on your kayak or canoeing adventure but it only adds to the memory of the experience.
